Review

Why Hero is better than Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Christopher Doyle. There are other reasons, subtleties, but that's basically it. Hot damn, that Aussie can cinematograph. Hero is the prettiest movie of the year. Or rather of 2002. Yeah, it has been out in China for two years already. Most martial arts/Zhang Yimou afficianados already own the DVD. Christopher Doyle has already built a solid body of work, a tireless camera-for-hire. His films with Wong Kar-Wai stand as a high water mark for cinematography in recent decades. It helps that Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung are the prettiest on screen couple in the world.

Admittedly, Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh are hard to beat. But, unless you're a hard-core Chow fan, Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung are simply better. As Hero is a better movie.

Here: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon < Hero < Ashes of Time. But Ashes of Time isn't in theaters now, so go see Hero instead.
